Doctor murdered his wife and cut her body into pieces

A Nairobi doctor, his second wife and two other persons were charged in court on Monday with the gruesome murder of his first wife.

The Prosecutor told a shocked court how Dr Patius Gichombi Njagi murdered his wife Virginia Wamaitha Thuku, with assistance of the other three, cut her body into pieces and packing them in five polythene bags which were thrown into the Nairobi river.

“Police recovered the body parts dumped in the river and later arrested the four,” State Counsel Daniel Karori told the court.

Others charged with the murder are Ms Mary Njeri Wachira and Mr Joseph Mwangi and Caesar Wachira Muthoni. Ms Thuku was killed on August 17, 2011 at Mwiki, Nairobi.

The State Counsel requested the accused be held in remand for 14 days, time within which a postmortem on Ms Thuku’s body would be carried out including a DNA test. Psychiatric evaluation to determine the sanity of the accused would also be done within the 14 days.

“The accused were arrested on June 22, 2012. Police did not have enough time to complete investigations,” Mr Karori told the judge.

Defence lawyer Ian Maina however pleaded with the court to release one of the accused Ms Wachira who was due to undergo a Caesarean operation on June 23, but did not undergo the procedure because she was in remand.

“Even this court can see that the suspect is pregnant and is due to deliver any time. She needs to be allowed to give birth,” said Mr Maina who submitted some medical records of the accused to back up his request.

Mr Karori told the presiding judge Lady Justice Florence Muchemi that the accused had to remain in remand and would get medical attention when she needed it.

“If she requires urgent medical attention, she will get it,” Mr Karori told the judge.

Justice Muchemi directed Muthaiga Police Boss to ensure Ms Wachira receives medical attention and the medical report submitted to her desk on which she bases her bail ruling.
