There are some words have no equivalent in the English language. One such is Schadenfreude, a German term meaning pleasure derived from others' misfortune.

That was surely the feeling of these passers-by as they swarmed, cheering, around this Bugatti Veyron to watch it slapped with a £60 parking ticket.

They were on King Street in Manchester city centre when they spotted the £1million supercar - the epitome of automotive indulgence - fall prey to the traffic warden's notebook.

Instead of, as usual, cursing the diligence of these most-hated of public servants, onlookers pulled out smart phones and began taking photos as he swooped.

Very soon, the illegally parked sportscar was boasting a bright new accessory - a freshly filled out demand to pay.

One passerby said: 'I'm sure the driver can well afford the ticket, but it seemed people wanted to see that car getting the same booking treatment as any other vehicle.'

The vehicle reputedly belongs to a multi-millionaire property developer - for whom £60 probably seems like small beer for the privilege of parking in a secure spot in the heart of the city.

The ultimate in big boys' toys, the Veyron was first introduced in 2005. Its Super Sport version is the fastest road-legal production car in the world with a top speed of 268mph.

The original model goes a still-horrifying 254mph at full pelt. Only the most super-rich celebrity owners, like Tom Cruise and Simon Cowell, have been known to own one.
