Five unforgettable games from a thrilling Premier League season

Four goals, a comedy penalty miss, one spot-kick that wasn’t awarded because the ball was out of play and Fernando Torres’ open-goal shocker: it all added up to an amazing afternoon at Old Trafford.

But then again there hasn’t been a season quite like this one for thrills and spills - and goals. Mirror Sport picks five unforgettable games from a Premier League campaign that is just five weeks old.

Man United 8 Arsenal 2, Aug 28
Wayne Rooney claimed the match ball and Ashley Young scored twice as the injury-hit Gunners were run ragged at Old Trafford, conceding eight for the first time since 1896.

Danny Welbeck, Nani and Ji-sung Park were the other scorers, with Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie replying for the Gunners, who saw rookie defender Carl Jenkinson sent off.

Tottenham 1 Man City 5 Aug 28
Edin Dzeko scored four and Sergio Aguero netted the other as City ran riot at White Hart Lane, making it an aggregate on the day of North London 3 Manchester 13.

Harry Redknapp’s Spurs were torn apart in midfield, with City debutant Samir Nasri marking his switch from Arsenal with no fewer than three assists.

Blackburn 4 Arsenal 3, Sept 17
Beforehand everyone was expecting Rover manager Steve Kean to wilt under the pressure of supporter unrest but by the final whistle it was Arsene Wenger whose future was under the microscope.

The Gunners led twice but contributed to their own downfall by scoring two of Blackburn’s goals and results elsewhere this weekend left them fourth from bottom and enduring their worst start for decades.

Fulham 2 Man City 2, Sept 18
City were cruising at 2-0 up thanks to a double from that man Aguero but Fulham pulled one back through Bobby Zamora, Roberto Mancini decided to take off player of the season contender David Silva and Danny Murphy duly levelled for the home side.

That ruined City’s 100% start to the season and left Mancini open to criticism. As were the boffins on the BBC website, where a glitch had them insisting the score was 3-2 to City and Vincent Kompany had ‘scored’ the winner.

Chelsea 3 Norwich 1 Aug 27
Juan Mata marked his Chelsea debut by coming off the bench and scoring but that was just one of many memorable moments as Didier Drogba ended up in hospital following a collision in the Canaries box.

Jose Bosingwa scored a fine opener but Norwich levelled through Grant Holt’s hook over his shoulder following a mix-up and Chelsea were under pressure until City keeper John Ruddy conceded a penalty and was sent off. Frank Lampard scored it and Mata wrapped it up in the 102nd minute.
