Sir Alex: Lay off De Gea

Sir Alex Ferguson defended flapper David De Gea after Manchester United bailed out their calamity keeper for the second week running.

United needed an 81st-minute own goal from Steven Reid to open their title defence with a scrambled win after £18.3m De Gea’s howler gifted Shane Long’s debut equaliser to West Brom. Fergie claimed De Gea was subjected to a “ridiculous aerial assault” from the Baggies, but the United boss admitted: “It was a slack goal to lose. David should have done better, his concentration cost him the goal.

“But he took a battering in the second half, when he should have been protected more by the referee but he wasn’t, but he is young and he will come through. Welcome to English football!

“It’s a hard process coming from Europe – even Peter Schmeichel had a torrid time because his first game was at Wimbledon on a Wednesday night, but he became arguably the greatest goalkeeper of all time.”

After De Gea ushered in Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko’s goal in the Community Shield, at Wembley Fergie had insisted: “We didn’t expect that and he won’t be doing it again.”

United’s joy was tempered by the loss of THREE defenders including centre-half Rio Ferdinand, who could miss the rest of England’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a hamstring injury.

Ferdinand is expected to be out for six weeks, ruling him out of next month’s double header against Wales and Bulgaria, and possibly the potential group decider in Montenegro on October 8.

United also lost skipper Nemanja Vidic for two weeks with a calf problem, while full-back Rafael De Silva is out for 10 weeks with a dislocated shoulder.
