Rooney was a stand-out in the centre of the park, spraying the ball around and claiming a deflected late goal as United beat Otelul 2-0.
And he is willing to be the “new Paul Scholes”, as he revealed: “I played a lot there when I was younger. You get a lot of the ball but we had to defend at times. If the manager asks me to do it, I will do it. It’s up to him.”
Rooney’s show was a rare highlight as United pulled off a slim victory over minnows Otelul Galati that puts them top of Group C on goal difference.
But United will have to beat Benfica at home in the next game or head for an awkward game in Basle to decide their destiny.
Antonio Valencia gave United a flying start, but they plodded for much of the game until Rooney’s deflected goal.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Winning was important... As for Wayne Rooney, it’s a short-term thing, him playing in midfield, with so many players missing.”
