Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor has spoken of his sadness at the vile abuse hurled at him by some Arsenal fans at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
The Togolese striker, who survived a machine gun attack that killed three members of the Togo party at last year's Africa Cup of Nations said: 'The songs they sang about me were very bad but was I surprised? No. Disappointed? Yes. It is sad that parents let their children hear or sing such things.
'Obviously it was all meant to hurt me, to upset me, to anger me. But I am so glad I kept my dignity in the face of people behaving like that. It is sad how the memory of something so awful could be used in such an awful way.'
Adebayor was unhurt when Angolan rebels opened fire on the Togo team bus in January 2010, after which he helped carry wounded team-mates into hospital and saw one friend die in his arms.
'It would be a great shame if they just remembered the stupid songs and not the great football,' added the 27-year-old, who is on loan from Manchester City.
'I understand Arsenal fans are frustrated but those chants won't have an effect on me. I've been through too many difficult times.'
